Middle-aged rural swedish men
(versión en español: pinchar aquí)
Two articles from the same authors. They study development of 1) obesity and 2) cardiovascular disease after 12 years of follow-up and they relate them to the study baseline food choices.
Article 1
Two surveys 12 years apart. Prospective observational study.
«We found that a low intake of dairy fat was associated with a higher risk of developing central obesity and that a high intake of dairy fat was associated with a lower risk of central obesity among men without central obesity at baseline» (see).
Article 2
Two surveys 12 years apart. Prospective observational study.
«Daily fruit and vegetables consumption was associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease only when combined with a high intake of dairy fat. Low intake of dairy fat, choosing mostly wholemeal bread or eating fish at least twice a week was not associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease in this cohort of rural middle-aged men». (see)
Table: Death or hospitalization owing to coronary heart disease during 12 years of follow-up according to food choices reported at baseline, adjusted analyses (N = 1,663).
Conclusions
These studies are observational so we are not allowed to conclusions of causality. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t say dairy fat causes obesity nor cardiovascular disease.
