If a system gets bigger it had to take in more energy than it expended. That is what the Laws of Thermodynamics tell you. If a system gets smaller, less mass, then it had to expend more energy than it took in. It’s a very simple law. It is always true. Always true: people, animals, everywhere in the universe it is true. Like any other law of the physics, if it tells us something about the universe it says nothing about why we get fat. Absolutely nothing. This is the biggest cock-up in the field of obesity research. It boggles my mind. It’s an 8th grade science mistake. They take a law that has no causality in it… it is an equal sign (ΔE=Ein-Eout), and they put like an arrow. Gary Taubes (42:46)

Si un sistema se hace más pequeño, menos masa, tuvo que gastar más energía de la que tomó. Es una ley muy simple. Siempre es verdad. Siempre se cumple: personas, animales, en todas partes el universo es correcta. Como cualquier otra ley de la física, si dice algo sobre el universo, no dice nada sobre por qué engordamos. Absolutamente nada. Ésta es la mayor metida de pata que ha habido el campo de la investigación de la obesidad. Me perturba la mente. Es un error científico propio de escolares. Toman una ley que no tiene causalidad… es un signo igual (ΔE = Eentra – Esale)  y ponen como una flecha.

And, then, if you say «come on, that’s ridiculous!», then they say «no, no, no, if he takes in more money than he expends, he gets richer, right? Therefore, taking in more money than you expend makes you rich». And it’s nonsense! It’s the exact same logic and somehow this has slipped by. Everybody believes it, I believed it seven years ago. You read a paper in obesity and it says obesity is, you know, a disturbance of energy balance. ¿Por qué Bill Gates es rico y nosotros no? Y yo digo: «porque recibió más dinero del que gastó». Es exactamente la misma lógica y no te dice absolutamente nada. Y, entonces, si dices «vamos, eso es ridículo», entonces dicen «no, no, no, si ingresa más dinero de lo que gasta, se vuelve más rico, ¿verdad? Por lo tanto, ingresando más dinero de lo que gastas te haces rico «. ¡No tiene sentido! Es exactamente la misma lógica y de alguna manera esto se nos ha colado. Todos lo creen. Yo lo creía hace siete años. Lees un artículo sobre obesidad y dice que la obesidad es, ya sabes, una alteración del balance de energía. No tiene sentido. No nos dice nada.
